Address books get exported from one phone and imported into another until the same person is in there three times with two of the numbers missing. This opens the .vcf as a table: every contact is a row, every email and phone is visible, and duplicates can be found, compared and deleted rather than guessed at.
Several files can be imported at once, which is how two address books get merged — everything lands in one list and identical cards are skipped instead of doubled. Photos, addresses, organisations, birthdays and notes are all kept as they were.
Editing is a form per contact with as many emails, phones and addresses as the person actually has. When the list is right, it exports as one .vcf that any phone, mail client or address book will import.

Questions
Can I merge two address books?
Yes. Import both files — everything joins one list, and cards that are already there are skipped rather than duplicated.
Are photos kept?
Yes. Embedded photos are read from the card and written back out with it.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The file is read in this tab and the list stays in this browser. That is also why it works with the network off.
